This book highlights the eight Jewish men and women who have served, or who currently serve, as Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court. It examines the lives, legal careers, Jewish background, and Jewish legacies of Louis D. Brandeis, Benjamin Cardozo, Felix Frankfurter, Arthur Goldberg, Abe Fortas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan. Dalin discusses how

the appointment of Brandeis in 1916 beganthetraditionofa“JewishSeat” on the Supreme Court and the role that anti-Semitism may have played in the lives of the justices and in their Senate con rmation hearings.

David Dalin is an ordained rabbi and widely-published scholar of American Jewish history. He is the author, co- author, or editor of eleven previous books. He has served as the Taube Research Fellow at Stanford University.
