Morris Dickstein, a regular contributor to publications like The New York Times Book Review, The New Republic, and The Nation, has written several books including The Gates of Eden and Leopards in the Temple. Dancing in the Dark recreates the extraordinary cultural history of the Great Depression - a dire decade that produced some of the greatest American art and culture. While much has been written on the depression's economic and politicalramifications, no writer or critic has ever chronicled the artistic achievements of that time. Dancing in the Dark focuses on the dynamic energy and insight the arts provided to the nation's morale. Dickstein takes readers on a richly evocative journey through an artistic landscape that looks at the many roles culture plays in times of national stress, proving that life is "all just a little bit of history repeating."
